If you enjoy the universe this one carries on it’s tale. Its central theme revolves around the Twelve Swords of Power forged by the gods, each endowed with a particular power or gift, and how various people acquire and use them. A few hundred more pages added to the end would have been nice instead of an unrelated second book. My only complaint is the fact saberhafen things are gleaned by divination rather than spies and footwork, half the time. If you’ve even read a few fantasy books in your life you’re not going to get anything here that you haven’t already read about in better books.
It ffed off as a game of the gods but later turns out to be the architecture of their demise. However, I read many of his “Berserker” series books so I thought I would give this a chance.

May 06, Jeffrey Daniels rated it really liked it. I would have liked to have seen more of the 12 magical swords, instead of just four. And the idea of these magic swords that the gods are using in some sort of game is, while not too original, at least an interesting idea to see play out.
It serves its purpose and remains light and fast and fun, but there are some aspects that hold it back from being great. Beings affected feel such an overwhelming sense of melancholy and apathy that nothing they would do seems to matter to them to any degree, and they simply sit down and wait to die.
The overall concept of the Book of Swords is pretty amazing – twelve swords forged by the god Vulcan have legendary powers and their impact on humanity. This series actually proves to have more depth than I recall it having. So humanity is basically stuck in the Dark Ages again, but with you know, gods, magic and mythical creatures like dragons and whatnot.
The Emperor also has a mysterious romance with Queen Yambu. This article may be written from a fan’s point of viewrather than a neutral point of view. This article needs additional citations for verification. The Blue Temple worships money, and is concerned with the finding, acquiring, and possession of it as an end to itself. Still, the setting is deep and well done. The First Book of Swords begins with the forging of the swords and the shitstorm that ensues once the greedy rulers of the New World realize just how much more powerful they can become if they owned even one of the swords.

So it was with mild disappointment that I read the last page without getting to the punchline, the novel ending as a chapter does. The Swords were forged on a lifeless, wind-scoured mountaintop, with fire drawn from the earth’s belly, and metal that fell from the sky. Since Mark is a paragon of virtue and heroism, Ben plays the role of a more believable and emotionally developed character for the reader to identify with.
We get hints of some hstory and such, but a sense that this world of magic occurs thousands of swordds into our future.
Definitely an hook read, not anything that’ll completely blow your mind or revolutionize anything, but much better than average schlock-fantasy story. The three books can be read in any order. Although each of them use the same characters and follow the same storyline and premise, each story is complete in of itself.
Luckily, this series follows suit with the former. The Demons of Saberhagen’s Swords universe are the remnants of atomic or other high power weapons detonations, rendered anthropomorphic by The Change. It’s biggest issues are some of the story ideas used in the Book of Swords seem like Saberhagen just threw them in there at the last second. In addition the wielder visibly ages bpok the Sword is drawn, estimatedly about five years for every minute the Sword is bared. The Red Temple provides and controls much of the traffic in prostitution and drugs, although they also encourage free lovegambling, gluttony, excessive drinking, or anything else that one can derive pleasure from.
However, the swords are more powerful than the gods realize, and soon they are in danger from their own creation.
