Beings affected feel such an overwhelming sense of melancholy and apathy that nothing they would do seems to matter to them to any degree, and they simply sit down and wait to die.

The overall concept of the Book of Swords is pretty amazing – twelve swords forged by the god Vulcan have legendary powers and their impact on humanity. This series actually proves to have more depth than I recall it having. So humanity is basically stuck in the Dark Ages again, but with you know, gods, magic and mythical creatures like dragons and whatnot.
